Who’s in your squad?

By Dan Hammond, Chief Disruption Officer, LIW

The Rugby World Cup is treating us to some bone-crunching action and some leadership lessons.

Eddie Jones, England’s coach, was asked in a press conference about his decision to ‘drop’ fly-half George Ford in their win against Australia. His answer was forthright: ‘I didn’t drop him mate. I changed his role’.

He was saying that the whole squad has a role to play, including starting on the bench. There are eight on the bench and they are chosen specially to come on to change the game.

‘It’s a 23-man game’, said Jones.

What does this mean for leadership?

The whole squad – not just the visible stars – play a vital role. Who is on your squad, in the background but vital to your success?

As The Scotsman said, ‘it’s all about the squad’. Time for some recognition?
