In these times of huge events, I have found solace in reading about the tiniest animals on earth – microbes – in Ed Yong’s excellent ‘I Contain Multitudes’.

A Dutchman named Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, born in 1632, used ingenious microscopes and bags of curiosity to discover these tiny creatures that make our existence possible. 

What does these mean for leadership?

Curiosity will be crucial in the coming months and years.

It’s valuable to be curious about things that we know exist but Leeuwenhoek teaches us to take it to a new level.

Think about it: what would make someone put under the microscope a drop of rainwater from the pot outside their house as he did? Most people would assume that it contained nothing. It contained multitudes.

Can we elevate our curiosity to look where there may be nothing?
