Take the L

By Dan Hammond, Chief Disruption Officer, LIW

In leadership circles we often talk about ‘humility’, ‘curiosity’, ‘vulnerability’ etc. to encourage people to be less concerned with ego.

However, we can fall into the trap of using these in an egocentric way. Who hasn’t heard someone say ‘I’m curious…’ then ask a question that tries to prove the other person wrong?

My teenage daughter taught me that, on social media, when someone is arguing a point but has clearly been proved wrong, others will tell them to ‘take the L’ meaning ‘take the loss’. In other words, admit defeat and move on.

They’re pretty direct these teenagers, appaz.

What does this mean for leadership?

Beyond the jargon of personal development, sometimes we simply have to admit that we are wrong.

The trick is not the ‘doing’ but the ‘being’: breaking the habit of being right.
