The view from the bridge

By guest contributor Dan Hammond, CPO of Squadify

In 1989, Sidney Yoshida coined the term ‘iceberg of ignorance’ to describe how knowledge of real problems diminishes as you go up in an organisation.

Heidrick and Struggles has released a study on teams that shows that the ‘bergs are still out there. They concluded that the main factors in accelerating teams are:

– Setting a clear direction
– Making effective decisions
– Implementing a distributed leadership model

However, the authors also found that team leaders rated their team performance higher than the team members did. Iceberg ahoy!

What does this mean for leadership?

The first thing is that leadership needs to be distributed. Team leaders need to hear from their teams about what’s going on for them, discuss it and act on it. Not doing so could be titanic mistake.
