Set in stone

By Pia Lee, CEO, LIW

Following the killing of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter protests, monuments across the US, UK and elsewhere, commemorating people with backgrounds linked to slavery and racism, are being toppled by angry demonstrators.

Simukai Chigudu, an Associate Professor of African Politics at the University of Oxford noted that “the meaning of a statue is not set in stone; it’s subjected to constant collective reappraisal as history unfolds”.

What does this mean for leadership?

Like statues, once revered and then derided, our judgements also require constant reappraisal. Holding on tightly to our own views cements our attitudes and, in time, can make us less relevant.

With the dawn of the ‘new normal’ of working, it may be time to courageously tear down some of these attitudes and tip them into the harbour.
