Not giving a s#%*

By Pia Lee, CEO, LIW

Whilst the world spun in panic this week over the threat of the Coronavirus, Australia drained its supermarkets of toilet rolls. Knives were drawn (literally), elbows were sharpened and supplies were stripped from shelves and squirrelled away to enable creature comforts in the unlikely event of quarantine.

What does this mean for leadership?

Never has the subject of toilet rolls been so widely discussed in Australian corporates as this week. Whilst hard to believe, it provides a valuable insight into the myopia that fear can create.

Here in Australia, palpable emotions, fanned by a summer of extraordinary climatic events, have sparked a national amygdala hijack.

It’s a time for perspective and to ask those around you: are you OK? Love is stronger than fear and oxytocin brings strength, courage, compassion and – with luck – humour.
