Keep your goals to yourself

By Dan Hammond, Chief Disruption Officer, LIW

We just dug out a 2010 TED Talk by Derek Sivers – you know, the shirtless dancing guy. It challenges the widely-held belief that sharing your goals makes you more likely to succeed.

The research says that people who announce their goals get a ‘social reward’ as if they had done the act, when all they have done is talk about it. This makes them less likely to succeed.

What does this mean for leadership?

If you want to announce your intentions, make sure it gives no immediate satisfaction: state your goal and also describe the effort you’ll have to make to achieve it.

e.g. ‘I’m going to run that marathon in September.  I am so unfit, I will need to train 6 times a week.  I am now going out for a run.’
