Leadership assessment centres are designed to test leadership behaviours through simulated ‘critical incidents’. The theory is that these events amplify our natural tendencies.

Ironically, these occur much more regularly in everyday life, where our responses are often observed and judged by many.

What does this mean for leadership?

Pandemics have existed as long as leadership. In 1665 the Great Plague claimed half of London’s population. While aristocrats, doctors and well-to-do merchants left London for their country estates, the Lord Mayor and Aldermen stayed to help stop the spread of the disease.

Yesterday two nations’ leaders, 14,000 kilometres apart, demonstrated polar behaviour: accountability versus the blame game; distribution of power versus ‘total authority’.

With death comes renewal, and with it, a conscious choice for the type of contemporary leadership required for a post pandemic world. That is real.
