Is your top team really your top team?

By Dan Hammond, Chief Disruption Officer, LIW

If it’s true that ‘no organisation outperforms its top team’ we are probably in trouble!

75% of cross-functional teams are dysfunctional and the team at the top is no exception.

Executive teams often focus on work being done by the individuals leading the functions, rather than the work of the team as a whole. One client told me that their meetings were ‘like public 1-to-1s’, taking it in turns to present to the boss. What a joy that must have been!

What does this mean for leadership?

Executive team members have two hats: the small hat for their functional responsibility and the big hat for the organisation.

Choose the big hat as much as possible. That will make you into a top team, not just a group of people at the top!
