Hybrid working: getting the communication balance right

The introverts among us might have welcomed the overnight shift to remote working in 2020 but the extroverts out there may well have struggled with the lack of human contact, especially over such a long period of time. The one thing that united everyone though was that no one was in the office.

And now we have hybrid working to wrap our heads around and bring its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to communication.

Because if a harmonious, successful team is one where everyone has an opportunity to contribute, how do you balance everyone’s needs? From the more introverted members of the team who might want to carry on working remotely to the extroverts who need to come back into the office.

The group chats full of GIFS and emojis and virtual team meetings that worked so well in lockdown might not be as effective.

If this sounds familiar, now might be the time to hit pause and review your team communication. We think approaching it from the introvert/extrovert angle might throw up some fresh ideas. Maybe consider:

  • Who are the extroverts and introverts in your team? How effective is your team communication given the mix of personality types in your team?
  • Are there enough different ways for people to share thoughts and ideas?
  • What can you learn from your more introverted colleagues and vice versa? Can you include some of their communication and working styles into your team communication?
