Going the extra mile

By Dan Meek, CEO, LIW

This week, revelations emerged from Goldman Sachs employees of 95-hour weeks, five hours sleep a night, harsh treatment by senior bankers and the effects on their physical and mental health.

Abusive management is never forgivable but while these hours may seem absurd, you could say that Goldman can choose that culture if they wish and people can work there or not.

What does this mean for leadership?

However, corporations have a positive part to play in society – beyond the old ‘sweat the asset’ measures – including giving employees the opportunity to be healthy and to have a life outside the firm. This could be serving the community or just being supportive daughters, sons, friends etc.

The Goldman CEO told employees to go the extra mile. Perhaps he should be thinking how Goldman can do the same.
