Giving leadership your vote

By Pia Lee, CEO, LIW

It’s hard when your heart strings are yanked whilst watching as your children strive and struggle in life.  Recently my niece lost out on the class prefect role. This had little to do with leadership potential but a whole lot about popularity.

A worry, given global leadership is seriously in danger of confusing popularity with doing what’s right.

What does this mean for leadership?

Failed attempts could induce a retirement of all ambitions or a seeking of endless ‘how-to-be-popular’ YouTube videos.

Alternatively losing, failing, or overcoming adversity provide the richest chance to learn, reset and press on. It’s often the ‘one before the one’ experience that crystallises insight and fuels direction.

Whilst it’s tempting to save others’ bitter disappointment by stepping in, it is actually re-framing the experience as a positive learning one, which could be the greatest gift of all.
