The UK’s exam results season has provided synonyms worthy of an English GCSE: fiasco, farce, debacle.

The attempts by the regulator Ofqual to award grades for exams that were not taken – using an algorithm – have led to bias and widespread disappointment.

Trying to ‘get it right’ led them to get it very wrong.

What does this mean for leadership?

These are complex times. We are all having to do things that we’ve never done before: there is no map. What is more useful is our compass: a clear higher intent to guide our decisions.

Rather than setting the goal to accurately estimate the results people would have received, a clear higher intent such as ‘to help all our young people to succeed’ would have led to a different, and better, outcome.
