Are you exposing yourself?

By Dan Hammond, Chief Disruption Officer, LIW

“…what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career.” says Liam Neeson’s character Bryan Mills in the film Taken.

Clearly, one of those skills for Neeson is not knowing when disclosure becomes exposure.

Neeson hit the news this week after admitting to racist and murderous feelings after a friend was raped. While offensive, it seemed to be confessional and he was ultimately trying to make a conciliatory point about the pointlessness of revenge but the damage was done.

What does this mean for leadership?

Authenticity is not just you, unfiltered.

Disclosure about yourself is a way to deepen connections and demonstrate humility but you need to have your audience in mind: you want to say it, but do they want to hear it?
