A star team beats a team of stars

It’s hard to imagine a top-flight sports team neglecting group training in favour of individual coaching and still expecting to win. So why do we expect that from our teams in the workplace?

It’s long been our view that leaders need to focus on the collective rather than the individual, but easier said than done. Putting strong foundations in place is essential though and one simple way to approach this is to think of the three Cs:

  • Clarity: What’s the team is trying to achieve, why, and how?
  • Climate: Including resources, processes, culture, and stakeholder relationships.
  • Competence: Skills, knowledge, behaviour, and attitude.

The final piece of the jigsaw is making sure the team is well supported whether that’s a manager, coach, or mentor. The title matters less than making sure the focus is on the team.

Interestingly, research by the London School of Economics also showed that of the three Cs, the two conditions that really drive performance are clarity and climate, backing up our belief that a star team beats a team of stars.
